About

For several years, Shipton Parish Council leased this 3-acre field to a local farmer.  In 2021, the Parish Council decided to explore other uses for the plot. After dismissing solar panels and wind generation, a group of villagers rose to the challenge, and it was decided to use the land to support biodiversity, wildlife and conservation. This inspired the creation of the Shipton Wildflower Woods.

A Community Group

Shipton Wildflower Woods is a committee of Shipton by Beningbrough Parish Council and has collaborated with The Forest of Flowers, Huby, to develop a three-acre field into a wildflower wood. The initiative includes local people of all ages and aims to strengthen our community through a wide range of involvement and activities. A volunteer committee, with a wider team of volunteers, will manage this long-term project, whilst our ongoing fundraising will continue to finance the scheme.

Our Vision

A wildflower woodland habitat for a wealth of wildlife to be enjoyed and supported by the community.

Advice has been received from The Woodland Trust and The Eden Project through The Forest of Flowers, all experts in the field of Creative Conservation. Starting with the correct soil preparation, careful choice of native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, Shipton Wildflower Woods is a managed, low-maintenance habitat with interest throughout the year.

The Committee

We are a small group of local people, from different walks of life, but with a shared interest.

With John Farbrother as the inaugural chairperson, we meet several times a year. Shipton Wildflower Woods Committee has been entrusted to establish and maintain this wildflower woodland.  Supported by our community, our aim is to ensure this long-term project remains a village asset.
